Coffee Maker Mat

Things you’ll need:

Yarn:      Kitchen cotton worsted weight yarn like Peaches and Cream

                MC = main color,  1 skein                              red

                CC1 = contrasting color 1, ½ skein             off white

                CC2 = contrasting color 2, 3 yards             gold

Needles:              US size 6

Notions:               2 stitch markers, darning needle, scissors, row counter (optional)

Things to know:

Gauge:  Not terribly important since this is not a garment

Size of finished mat:    17.5 inches x 10 inches

Abbreviations:

K = knit

P = purl

pm = place marker

sm = slip marker

Tips:

MC and CC1 yarn are carried up the side through each of the 3 stripe section.  CC2 yarn is not carried up the side as you are only knitting 2 rows with it.

On all rows (except garter stitch rows) you will slip markers as you come to them.  The markers are to help you remember where to knit on the purl side rows.

I knitted with US size 6 circular needles, 16 inches.  Any length will work, as will straight needles, since you are knitting back and forth.

Directions:

Cast on 42 stitches using the long tail cast on method

Knit 6 rows in garter stitch (knit every row)

First Section

Row 7:   K5, pm, K32, pm, K5

Row 8:   K5, sm, P32, sm, K5

Repeat Row 7 and 8 nine times for a total of 18 rows, slipping markers as you come to them.

 Join CC1 without breaking MC. Yarn not in use will be carried up the side.

With CC1 knit Rows 7 and 8 one time.
